Switzerland misses greenhouse gas target

Switzerland has narrowly missed its greenhouse target set by the Kyoto Protocol – even taking into account lockdowns.

The figures for the end of 2020 have just been published by the Federal Environment Office and they show greenhouse gas emissions are down 19% on 1990 levels – the legal target is 20%.

While it may seem only a small margin – a mild winter which cut the use of heating oil and reduced traffic due to lockdowns wasn’t sufficient to bring the figures down.

One of the major factors on missing the targets was the agriculture sector. It was supposed to have cut emissions by 10% since 1990 – but it’s only managed 2%.
