Switzerland loses human rights case

The European Court of Human Rights

Switzerland has been condemned by the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg for its decision to deny asylum to a gay Iranian.

The man has been awarded EUR 7,000 in compensation for his costs.

He explained to the court that he was beaten by his family because of his sexual orientation.

He applied for asylum in 2019, but the State Secretariat for Migration denied his request, saying it was not credible. That decision has been upheld by Swiss courts.

The European court ruled the expulsion order exposed the man to inhumane treatment.
