Swiss universities review Russian links

Swiss universities are reviewing their collaboration with Russian researchers following the Ukraine invasion. But not all are taking the same approach.

Many are cutting exchange programmes – which is following the advice of the Rectors’ Conference of Swiss Universities.

The ETH in Zurich says it’s in a difficult situation. It has strong links with the Stankin University in Moscow – but that was one institution that signed a declaration supporting the war.

So, it’s suspending its joint programmes. But the ETH says it will not sanction individuals who are not to blame. So Russian students studying in Zurich can continue.

Many other universities are taking a similar approach.

But the University of Basel says it sees no reason to stop its academic partnerships with Russian schools – but the University of Bern is reviewing all its links.
