The Stewi - the umbrella-style rotating clothes dryer found in countless gardens around the world - has been saved from liquidation by a new owner.
Invented by Walter Steiner in Winterthur in 1947 and named after him, it became such a fixture of Swiss life that the word entered everyday vocabulary.
The brand expanded abroad, was exhibited at the 1958 Brussels World's Fair, and employed 120 staff at its peak. But as tumble dryers spread and cheaper Asian rivals arrived, sales fell and the company was twice pushed to the edge of bankruptcy.
Liechtenstein-based Reichardt SA has now stepped in to buy the group, which is headquartered in Saland in the canton of Zurich.
