Swiss firms prepare legal action against the US

Several Swiss companies have either launched, or are preparing to do so, legal action against the Trump administration for illegally collecting tariffs on their products.

The move follows the US Supreme Court ruling that Donald Trump didn’t have authority to levy the fees.

The sums could be huge.

The Swiss army knife maker, Victorinox, is demanding nearly USD 4m alone.

The watchmakers Swatch and Breitling are preparing to do the same, as are pharmaceutical companies, chocolate makers and luxury goods firms.

Since April, the United States has collected USD 2bn on Swiss goods.

Globally, the US could owe USD 175bn, according to a study by the University of Pennsylvania.
