Swiss fighters chase small plane

Air Force jets screamed across the country yesterday morning to shadow a small aircraft not responding to radio messages from air traffic control.

Sonic booms were heard after the jets were scrambled from Payerne in canton Vaud.

French authorities alerted Swiss controllers after the light aircraft stopped communication over Colmar, just before crossing the border.

The Swiss jets caught up with the plane over Graubünden and managed to get the pilot to make contact.

The plane was escorted into Italian airspace.

The aircraft was a Pilatus PC12 single prop plane and had taken off from the Netherlands.
