Stricter rules coming

As expected, the government is tightening Covid restrictions.

The Federal Health Office has confirmed the Omicron variant has now been detected in Switzerland. There are two related cases in canton Basel City and contact tracing teams are now tracking down those who may have been infected.

The president, Guy Parmelin, speaking at a press conference yesterday, says the arrival of the new variant is a shock and announced a series of measures designed to stop the spread.

The proposed new rules will be sent to the cantons for consultation – and should come into force at the end of the week.

The government says people should work from home if possible, or masks should be worn in offices.

Masks need to be worn in bars and restaurants unless sitting – and leaving contact details will be compulsory.

Test certificates will have their validity cut – a PCR test will be valid for 72 hours and an antigen test for 24.

There will be mass testing in schools on a regular basis.

And health passes will be needed for all indoor events – including private gatherings. The only exemption will be for private events with 10 people or less.
