Street celebrations after Swiss win

The streets in Switzerland erupted with joy last night after beating France on penalties in the Euro championships and move to the quarter finals. It’s the first time Switzerland is through to the quarter finals of a major tournament since 1954.

Switzerland showed it would be a team France would have to take seriously after it took an early 1-nil lead in the first half.

France restored the balance in the second with two goals in quick succession – but the last 10 minutes of normal time was explosive with Switzerland scoring 2 – making the result at end of normal time 3 all.

The score stayed the same during the extra period, meaning the result would come down to penalties – which Switzerland won 5-4.

They will now face Spain in St Petersburg on Friday in the quarter finals.
