Storks invade Vaud - experts delighted

A record number of storks arrived in canton Vaud last week.

Experts believe there were more than 700 that settled on a recently harvested field in Gros-de-Vaud area.

The birds are passing through, migrating to warmer climes for the winter.

Storks are one of the winners of global warming. Many now winter in Spain, when they used to travel to the Sahel, which meant crossing the Sahara, making the migration far more hazardous.

The increased number of birds is pleasing ornithologists as numbers have been decreasing for years – mainly after the second World War – due to habitat destruction and farming practices.

Historical records from the 19th century show that Switzerland was a major stop-off for storks – and now they’re returning.
