The idea of a specific tax for newly arrived immigrants is being discussed.
The Liberal Party is expected to raise the issue in parliament, saying it should form part of the new negotiations with the EU.
The idea is that foreigners would be asked to pay a tax of between 10 and 25 francs a day for three or five years - or an extra three percent of income for 11 years. That would be similar to the level that Swiss nationals who don’t perform military service pay.
It would raise around a billion francs a year.
While the Federal Council is signalling it’s not completely opposed to the idea, it would be complicated to apply it to EU nationals as under free movement rules, EU nationals cannot be treated differently from locals.
