Slightly more avalanche deaths this season

There were 23 avalanche deaths this season, slightly above the average of 21 over the last 20 years.

The figures, from the Snow and Avalanche Research Institute, also show slightly more than average got caught up in an avalanche – 261. The average is 220.

But there are signs on how climate change is affecting the snow. Avalanches are now more common on the higher ground as there’s less snow in the mid-ranges. 

The researchers say that there’s more rain in the mountains, even in the height of winter, than before, which also increases the likelihood of an avalanche.
