Slight increase in Swiss development aid due to the war in Ukraine

Switzerland contributed 0.56% of the country’s gross national income to development assistance last year; a slight increase compared to 0.51% in 2021.

However, the contribution still falls far short of the internationally agreed target of 0.7%.

The total development assistance budget in 2022 came to CHF 4.274 billion, more than a quarter of which came from asylum-related costs.

Last year, the State Secretariat for Migration paid CHF 702 million in subsidies to the cantons to assist Ukrainian refugees, according to the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs.

Asylum costs in Switzerland represented 28% of official development assistance in 2022, the highest percentage so far.

In 2021, asylum costs accounted for only 9% of total official development assistance.
