Shops will not open on 22nd December

Geneva shops will not be open on Sunday 22nd December.

The cantonal Department of the Economy had given the green light to the opening which it believes would have helped businesses during these difficult times.

But unions took the matter the court, arguing the canton didn’t have the authorisation and it breached shop opening laws and federal employment rules.

Judges agreed – so shops will stay closed.

The Economy Department says the Sunday opening would have brought a breath of fresh air to Geneva businesses.

The ruling has also angered the entrepreneurs’ association, NODE.  The secretary, Yves Menoud, says it’s a shame. Genevans will be able to shop in neighbouring France or canton Vaud. He also points out that no one can be forced to work on Sundays and those who do get well paid for it.
