Several Russian owned jets rotting at airports

Several Russian owned private jets are simply rotting away in hangars across the country.

Under the terms of the sanctions, airspace is closed to Russian aircraft and airport staff are unable to service the planes.

Engineers point out even a parked plane needs regular checking – often several times a month - to keep them airworthy. A gap in the maintenance records means they can’t be sold and their value will plummet.

But it’s also a headache for airports. The jets are taking up valuable space and they can’t be paid for it. It’s thought there are six stuck in Basel, including one owned by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, and two more in Geneva.

The government is examining the possibility to allow them to be moved so they don’t disrupt other operations.
