Scammers take CHF 8m this year alone

Despite almost constant warnings – more and more people are falling for telephone scams.

There have been three times more attempts to rip people off this year than last.

The current favourite is the so called ‘nephew’ scam.

This is when a person is called and is told that a family member is in distress and needs money.

Scammers are targeting the elderly and those who live alone, according to the Crime Prevention Office.

So far victims have been fleeced out of CHF 8m this year – although that figure could be higher.

A national awareness campaign is being launched.
