Rive market crash driver ordered to see doctors

A man who drove his car into the market in Rive in Geneva three and a half years ago has been ordered to undergo psychiatric treatment – and banned from driving for a further five years.

In June 2022 the man in his thirties crashed into the market, seriously injuring a trader, before coming to a stop.

Judges accepted the man was suffering from diminished responsibility – but surprised he was still driving.

The man’s defence explained he was suffering from severe depression and had recently lost his job and girlfriend.

He was ordered to undergo treatment – but when judges learnt he was still driving, they banned him for five years.

The worker who was seriously injured in the incident – he nearly lost his leg – has forgiven him and withdrawn his complaint.
