Records broken at Escalade

A record number of people turned out this weekend for the Escalade races.

Over 57,000 runners hit the streets – but it was the fun run, the Marmite, which saw the greatest increase this year – 1,000 more took part on Saturday than the year before.

Swiss European champion Dominic Lobalu won the men’s Elite race and Diane van Es from the Netherlands took the women’s race.

But much support was for Tadesse Abraham, the Swiss nationalized Eritrean marathon runner, who’s retiring after 20 years. It will be his last race in Geneva – he came in 11th.  He says he felt the warmth of the crowd during his last race.
