Queues form outside asylum centres

Large queues formed outside Federal Asylum Centres as thousands of fleeing Ukrainian refugees arrive.

The government says it expects 1,000 a week to enter the country seeking help – by Sunday afternoon, over 3,000 had registered – mainly women and children.

A special S permit is being issued, which allows the holder to work or go to school.

Staff and equipment are being ramped up to handle the larger than expected influx and an online registration system is now being set up.

But there are plenty of places those fleeing the war can stay. The NGO, the Swiss Refugee Council, is placing people with those offering spare rooms and government run hostels.
