A “Silent March” against anti-Semitism and in support of Israel planned for today in Geneva has been called off.
The organizers, Silent Walk Switzerland, had backing from several associations, including the Swiss-Israel Association.
But the canton’s Department of Institutions decided to postpone the event indefinitely due to security concerns as a counter-demonstration by pro-Palestinian groups was authorized for the same day.
Pro-Palestinian organizations condemned the march, calling it unacceptable amid what they described as “the genocide of the Palestinian people.”
Silent Walk Switzerland, meanwhile, said it stood for Israel’s right to exist and against all forms of hatred and discrimination.
Similar marches in other Swiss cities, like Lausanne in September, have already drawn tense counter-protests and police intervention.
