Two opposing demonstrations met in Lucerne on Saturday.
More than a thousand were protesting against Switzerland’s bilateral agreements with the European Union.
The rally attracted several far-right groups from across Europe, including representatives from extremist parties in Hungary and Bulgaria.
At the same time, around 1,500 counter-demonstrators gathered in a separate protest organised by left-wing parties and anti-fascist groups.
Despite fears of confrontation, both demonstrations remained largely peaceful, although police did confiscate tear gas grenades from several participants and carried out a number of arrests.
