Post Office to cut staff

It’s a grim day at Swiss Post. The yellow giant has posted first-half results well below last year’s.

Operating profit fell 29% to 118 million francs. And even though the company remains in the black, it plans job cuts.

Up to 100 layoffs and 20 contract changes are on the table in the central office’s administrative division, one in three staff could be affected.

The union Syndicom calls the move a slap in the face, especially as Swiss Post is hiring elsewhere.

Management blames falling volumes of letters, newspapers and counter services, plus rising costs.

One bright spot: parcel deliveries rose 3.4%.
