Politicians rethink traditional views after invasion

The Russian invasion of Ukraine is triggering a major rethink in some political parties about their attitude to the army and weapons.

The Social Democrats have long been against further spending on the army and were fighting a CHF 400m programme of new infantry vehicles, saying there’s no plausible scenario for their need.

But National Councillor Franziska Roth says her party was wrong. She’s admitting the reality is different.

It looks likely the party will change its policy when it meets in March.

Similarly, the Liberal Party is adjusting its views. The party’s president, Thierry Burkart is calling for a reversal of their policy against the purchase of F 35 fighter jets. He Tweeted the current collection of signatures to force a vote to stop the purchase should end, saying the argument that there’s no longer a chance of a conventional war in Europe is wrong.
