Politicians call for limits on night flights

A cross party group of Geneva politicians are in favour of stricter rules at the airport banning night flights.

At a meeting in Versoix, organised by the Tribune de Genève, four candidates for the Council of State in the upcoming elections say they favour limited flights after 10pm.

There was some disagreement over how to handle delayed flights. Some say there should be a tolerance until 1030pm.

Unlike Zurich airport which does have a strict closure time between 11pm and 6am, Geneva accepts flights 24 hours a day – but does restrict commercial flights overnight. Most late-night activities will be private jets.

Those in favour of restrictions cite studies which show poor sleep has a severe consequence for quality of life and health with heart attacks more common around airports.

All did agree there may be an occasional need for overnight humanitarian flights from Geneva and the airport will always accept an aircraft requesting an emergency landing.
