A group from the Geneva Grand Council has expressed concern after a second person this year died in custody at the police station on Boulevard Carl-Vogt in Jonction.
The Commission of Official Visitors have the right to enter places of detention whenever they want with no warning. They paid an unexpected visit to the police station over the weekend.
They wanted to check the conditions detainees are being kept in.
Two have died at the police station this year - a 20-year-old man in January and a 21-year-old woman last week.
The police point out deaths in custody are very rare. There have only been 3 other deaths in custody in the last 20 years.
The Commission of Official Visitors will meet later this week to compile their report.
