The United States announced yesterday that it had invited the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to peace talks in August in Switzerland - aimed at ending the conflict in Sudan.
The Sudanese army and Rapid Support Forces have been embroiled in a war since April 2023, which has left tens of thousands dead and caused a major humanitarian crisis. Previous negotiations have not been successful.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced in a press release on Tuesday that the talks are to be co-sponsored by Saudi Arabia and will include the African Union, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and the UN as observers.
It’s hoped the talks will take place in just a few weeks - on 14 August.
