It seems it was the cost which sank the idea of the pedestrian bridge running next to the Pont du Mont Blanc.
Although the new bridge had broad political support – and would have been partly financed by the Confederation – the CHF 54m price tag was too much for voters.
But the question on how to improve traffic flow remains. One idea being floated is to open a tram line across the existing bridge – or even putting it in a tunnel.
