Parliament has rejected calls to bring in laws to restrict the amount of sugar in food.
Two cantons, Geneva and Fribourg, called on Bern to bring in regulations to limit and label how much sugar is in packaged and processed food.
Those backing the proposal say people in Switzerland consume four times the amount of the recommended allowance of six teaspoons a day.
But most say it’s better to allow manufacturers to cut sugar usage themselves and the EU is soon to rule on labelling anyway.
