Geneva's autoroute tunnels south of the city were flooded last night after a violent storm struck just after 6pm.
Hail and torrential rain trapped drivers inside the Confignon tunnel, with some abandoning their cars as water levels rose. The fire and rescue service intervened to evacuate motorists before sealing off the tunnel.
Border crossings and overpasses across the city became refuges for stranded vehicles, with traffic still heavily disrupted at 7.40pm. Geneva police say the storm alone caused the chaos; normal conditions returned by late evening.
