Parliament rejects WHO alcohol policy

The Upper House of Parliament, the Council of States has overwhelmingly rejected adopting an alcohol policy based on recommendations from the World Health Organisation.

The WHO claims that every drop of alcohol is harmful.

By 31 votes to 8, with three abstentions, MPs backed a motion calling for caution on alcohol guidelines.

Center Party Senator Benedikt Würth argues there is no scientific consensus that any amount of alcohol is harmful and wants the Federal Council to wait for the results of a major international study due in three years.

The left criticises the move as a delaying tactic, while the Federal Council is defending the WHO’s harm-reduction approach.
