The Omicron variant is circulating in Geneva and will soon become the dominant strain, according to the cantonal doctor Aglaé Tardin.
There’s now firm evidence of community transmission – the first cases could be traced back to returning travellers – but now it’s being passed between family and friends.
Authorities say there are around 600 to 800 new cases a day.
73% of the new cases are unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated.
There are currently 137 in hospital in Geneva with 15 in intensive care. One of those is a child under 19 years old.
The third dose vaccination drive is going well says the cantonal pharmacist, Nathalie Vernaz-Hegi.
65% of those over 75 have had a third dose. 70,000 have been jabbed three times – and another 50,000 are expected to get it before the end of the year.
Children between 5 and 11 will be able to get the vaccine in January.
