A study by the Geneva University Hospital and the University of Geneva shows the Omicron variant of Covid has the ability to evade the immune system.
Researchers say this explains the latest wave hitting the country – and especially Geneva.
But those who have been vaccinated are ten times better protected than those who aren’t. Studies show the vaccinated have a much better capacity to neutralize the virus than those who haven’t.
Even those who have been previously infected.
Meanwhile, the Federal Health Office is now recommending that all those over 80 should now get a fourth booster.
There’s not likely to be an update of that advice until the fall, when it’s expected that all adults should get another shot.
The vaccines available at the end of the year could be better targeted for Omicron. The regulator, Swissmedic, is currently evaluating data from drug maker Moderna.
