Number of vegetarians grow - but still very few

There are 250,000 vegetarians and 38,000 vegans in Switzerland. The majority are young female graduates.

That’s according to a survey by the Swissveg association.

The number of vegetarians is up slightly – from 3.4% of the population to 4.1%. But veganism is growing in popularity faster, although it’s still very niche. Last year it was point 3% - today it’s point 6%.

The survey shows that two thirds of vegetarians in the country are women.

The survey means the Swiss meat association doesn’t need to do their own. Clearly more than 95% of the population eat meat.
