Domestic violence campaigners are furious at the Federal Office of Communications.
For years they’ve been campaigning for a three-digit telephone number which could be used by to get help.
Five years ago, OFCOM, which allocates phone numbers, said it would provide a number that would work across the country – but now they say they need another 6 months.
Canton Zurich is particularly angry as it has been preparing for the new number. It’s trained and hired staff, ready to answer the calls.
Many MPs are also furious. One, Tamara Funicello from Bern, says there’s been 12 femicides already this year, and asks what else need to happen before action is taken?
OFCOM says because the calls need to be directed to the relevant canton the problem is geographically allocating the incoming call. It also points out a new short number hasn’t been created for 20 years.
