No cats allowed in new Zurich building

A new housing estate in Zurich is causing controversy as the owners have banned cats from the start.

The modern complex isn’t due to open until the end of next year, but already tenancy agreements have been drawn up – and no cats will be allowed at all.

The development, called Kraftwerk 1 will have 350 apartments and house around a 1,000 people.

The owners say the apartments are small - around 31 square meters per person - and they feel such a space is not conducive to animals.

Legally, it seems they’re on safe ground. Landlords are allowed to ban pets. Although strangely, a maximum of 8 dogs across the whole building will be allowed.
