No blue lights for municipal police

Unions representing Geneva municipal police officers have lost a federal court case on whether they can use blue emergency lights on their vehicles instead of the orange lights the cars are fitted with at the moment.

The federal court backed rulings already made by cantonal courts which concluded the question is not actually a matter for the judicial system – but for politicians.

Local police officers say they’re being asked to do more in the canton, and they want to have the blue lights to allows them some freedom from traffic laws similar to the cantonal force.

But the canton disagrees. The State Councillor for Security, Carole-Anne Kast, says the tasks given to municipal officers means they don’t need to have the blue lights.
