New vote likely on e-ID

It looks likely voters will be asked again their opinion on rolling out a new electronic ID system.

It’s backed by the government, but the people are more sceptical – they’ve been asked before and said no in 2021.

The system would allow people to prove who they are online – which would make asking for official documents, such as driving licences, easier. This version is due to come into force next year.

Bu those against it, including the youth section of the Swiss People’s Party, say it’s threat to personal privacy and opens up surveillance dangers.

They’ve collected 60,000 signatures to force the issue back to the people.
