New vaccine could be on its way

There could soon be a new vaccine available – and it works in a completely different way than the others currently being used.

The US pharmaceutical company Novavax has put forward its Covid jab, Nuvaxovid for approval by Swissmedic.

The new drug will be the first protein vaccine available in the country. It contains a coronavirus spike protein which triggers the immune system.

In trials in the US and the UK, results suggest it provides a protection level of around 90%.

It does have another major advantage. It can be kept in a fridge for six months which makes distribution much easier.
