New suicide capsule unlikely to be used in Switzerland

The two main organizations that offer assisted suicide in Switzerland, Exit and Dignitas, says a new suicide capsule developed by an Australian doctor is unlikely to be used by them.

The capsule has been invented by Philip Nitschke who helped people die in Australia before a regional law was overturned by the Australian federal government.

The capsule works by filling with nitrogen. This causes death by lack of oxygen, but Nitschke says there’s no symptoms of suffocation and no panic.

Exit in Switzerland told the press that they don’t believe the device is a viable alternative to the current drug-based method. Dignitas holds a similar view.

One of the main issues mentioned by assisted suicide support groups is the patient is physically separated from their loved ones in the final moments.

Around 3 people are helped to end their lives in Switzerland every day.
