According to the Copernicus network, the global average temperature on Sunday 21 July was 17.09 degrees, beating the previous record in July 2023 of 17.08 degrees.
Sunday has therefore taken the top spot for hottest day since records began in 1940.
Before 2023, the last record was set in 2016, at 16.8°C, but we’ve had more than 50 days that have been warmer than that in the last year.
According to Copernicus, the new record could be broken again in the coming days before temperatures drop.
