The Fribourg International Film Festival has crowned its 2026 winner, awarding the Grand Prix to Iranian director Ali Asgari for his satire Divine Comedy — a film banned by Tehran that takes aim at bureaucracy and censorship.
At the 40th edition’s closing ceremony, Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania received the first-ever Fribourg Cinema Award for her career achievements.
The Special Jury Prize went to My Father’s Shadow by Nigerian director Akinola Davies Jr..
Organisers also reported record attendance, surpassing last year’s figure of more than 51,000 admissions.
The festival returns for its 41st edition in March 2027.
