Geneva is to introduce a new system to tackle domestic violence.
Perpetrators will have to wear a tag to make sure they keep a safe distance from the victim.
The system differs from the current method which uses tags to make sure a convicted criminal is only in the places they’re allowed to be – normally at work or at home.
But the news system would allow the tagged person to go where they’d like – except a pre-arranged safety bubble around the victim.
Canton Zurich is running a similar system which allows to warn the parties if they get too close to each other, but it was decided that wouldn’t work in Geneva as the system uses the mobile phone network. But in Geneva it’s too easy for the device to detach from the Swiss network due to the proximity of France.
Anti domestic violence campaigners welcome the new ideas – but also stress the perpetrators need access to therapy.
