New Geneva tunnel is underused

The Tunnel des Nations at the official opening

Geneva’s Tunnel des Nations is seeing far less use than anticipated, with just 11,000 vehicles passing through daily — well below the 17,600 projected in its 2016 building permit.

The 1.2-kilometre route opened after a CHF 171 million investment by the canton.

Officials say the tunnel still needs time to become part of regular driving habits.

One key reason for the low traffic is the nearby Ferney road remains open. That’s expected to change later this year when construction begins on the Nations tram line.

Despite the tunnel's light traffic, the canton says the overall impact on local roads has been positive.
