New Geneva app is sadly very successful

City of Geneva

A feature on a new mobile app launched by the city of Geneva is a great success – for all the wrong reasons.

The app called ‘Genève en poche’ or ‘Geneva in your pocket’ is packed full of features which will allow users to get the most out of the city.
And it also has a function which allows people to report street harassment. It’s proving popular, unfortunately.

The app was launched 85 days ago and already 79 people have filed a report.

Geneva mayor, Marie Barbey-Chappuis, says she’s not sure whether she should be happy about that – but the app is showing that it meets a need.
The most common complaint are catcalls about how someone looks, then followed by sexist or sexual remarks. Most of the targets of the harassment are women.

Many of those reporting the harassment say they want to make a formal complaint.
