New car tax law could be decided in court

Judges may have the final say about the new Geneva vehicle tax which has shocked some car owners.

Many were very unpleasantly surprised to receive a bill several times higher than they were expecting.

But a Geneva City Councillor, Daniel Sormanni, is planning to argue to the Constitutional Chamber of the Court of Justice that voters didn’t have enough information when they decided the change earlier this year – and so the new law should be annulled.

He argues that as some of the bills actually surprised officials when the calculations were made, they clearly didn’t have enough information themselves, and so couldn’t have given the electorate enough information.
