New car sales down - petrol remains popular

New car registrations were down 8% last year – but electric cars are selling well.

Figures from the Federal Statistics Office show either fully electric or hybrids made up 25% of all new sales.

But it’s not enough to reach the government’s plan of half of all cars sold should be electric by 2025.

Petrol powered cars remain the most popular – making up 37% of all new sales.

The lower sales last year are likely due to the lack of supply of new cars. Many manufacturers are having problems due to the war in Ukraine which has hit component makers.
