The mother of a 15-year-old girl murdered by her 14-year-old school mate in canton Aargau says she feels abandoned after she discovered the perpetrator may only serve a few days in jail for the crime.
The girl stabbed her friend with a knife she’d bought earlier in Migros in May.
Prosecutors say juvenile law focuses on rehabilitation not punishment. Patrik Killer, head of the Zurich Juvenile Prosecutors Office, says young people act impulsively and long sentences are not a deterrent.
He points out that this country’s approach is more successful than in Austria and Germany as there are fewer crimes committed by under 15s.
The girl is currently being assessed in a secure psychiatric facility.
