Most want new deal with EU

Most of the people want Switzerland to secure a deal with the EU.

People see the benefit of a closer relationship with the bloc. A survey by GfS Bern show 71% support a new treaty.

The survey shows support is across the board – with even Swiss People’s Party voters seeing the upsides.

German speakers are a bit more enthusiastic than the French speakers at 74%. But still support is strong in the west, at 64%.

Attitudes have changed in the last year or so, with more people now preparing to compromise on issues like wage protection and freedom of movement for EU citizens.

Talks restarted with the EU last year – it’s hoped a deal will be struck by the end of this year.
