More and more young people are being hospitalized with mental health problems in Geneva.

Hospital stays for those aged between 10 and 24 climbed 27% in the canton in 2021.

The figures from the Cantonal Statistics Office show that girls were more likely to need help compared to boys. 850 females required overnight care compared to 500 males.

Mental disorders are now the main reason young people are kept in hospital. Before the pandemic it was traumatic injuries.

Head of the Child Psychiatric Department at the University Hospital in Geneva, Rémy Barbe, says those seeking help is low compared to those needing it.

He believes the rise in cases is down to ‘de-stigmatization’ as more are ready to talk about their mental health since covid than before the pandemic.
