More women seek breast reduction surgery

The number of women seeking breast reduction surgery in Switzerland has doubled in the last 20 years – with the greatest increase in demand over the last few years.

The Vaud Cantonal Hospital in Lausanne says they’re doing 40% more compared to recent years.

It echoes similar trends worldwide, according to the International Society of Aesthetic Surgery. While many women seek a reduction to relieve back pain and other discomfort, many also say they’re fed up with men looking at them.

But getting your insurance to pay for the operation can be tricky, if there’s not a clear medical reason. Some insurers ask for the applicant to lose weight first, connecting weight with breast size. That’s not true, says the Head of Reconstructive Surgery at the Vaud hospital, Yves Harder.
