More than CHF 3 billion from Afghanistan are blocked in Switzerland

A bank account containing some CHF 3.2 billion from Afghanistan are blocked in an account at the Bank for International Settlements in Basel.

According to the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, the money belongs to the Afghan people.

The account was opened in the name of the private foundation "Fund for the Afghan People". But the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs says that, so far, nothing from the funds has been distributed.

Tamedia newspapers reported yesterday that the money in the account should not be used for humanitarian aid. The funds have led to several million francs in interest.
